 True core training is training the ability of your trunk stabilizers to maintain a stiff, neutrally aligned spine. Developing your spine’s resistance to rotational and/or shear forces is EXTREMELY important in keeping your back happy and #injuryfree!

Whoever your favorite NFL player is, you can't deny what an incredible story Adrian Peterson has become. In 2012, he returned to playing professional football NINE months after tearing his ACL (AND MCL). You hear that?! While everyday Joe's like you and me often take up to 12 months to feel normal with rec activities, Peterson was already back to contact sports, likely shaking his head in disgust at what pathetic humans we are. Btw, dude is 34 and still a starting running back in the NFL.

From a PT lens, I can't help but think how diligent he was at every stage of his rehab (including agility training). Lateral agility is just one area of focus during advanced phase rehabilitation for a number of injuries, including ACL reconstruction. Here is one progression I commonly utilize once someone has been cleared by their Ortho to start agility training AND demonstrates adequate strength, balance and confidence.

We don't just move in one direction, so why train that way?!

Quick note on SI Joint pain. Depending on which healthcare provider you talk to, you might hear different explanations about this type of pain.

The SIJ is heavily reinforced by several very strong ligaments. Current research shows movement at this joint is so minimal it’s essentially undetectable to the human hands.
—-
So the likelihood of your SI joint being “out of place” is very low.
Note: if you are pregnant or were in a major trauma, you could have appreciable movement at your SIJ. Outside of these cases probably not.
——
So what should you do about SI joint pain?? Outside of improving mobility and strengthening in a pain free range, here is a focus I use:
️focus on movements that require one side glute and hamstring, and the other side lat.
This reinforces efficient force transfer through the body (across this joint).
Also bear crawls because they are the best.
The goal of the lunge pulses is to build strength and tolerance in a position that can sometimes be troublesome for people with SIJ related pain.

Do you find yourself pressing into the front of your shoulder and moving your arm around after a set of bench?

It’s a pretty common sight at most gyms, but I want to show you a few exercises to help get rid of that irritation at the front of your shoulder.

I recommend starting with some chest openers (pec stretch, active release with a lacrosse ball, or TRX angels). These are not shown in this post but are in the shoulder program.

Next work your way through these exercises focusing on scapular position, and slow, controlled movements.

The first 3 use a variety of movements and contraction types to prep your shoulder for pressing. The landmine floor press is a variation of chest pressing that tends to be very tolerable for those with shoulder irritation.

 Low back stretches just making your low back worse? Well this could be because for the time being your low back doesn’t like being rounded (flexed) as it is in many of these low back stretches. Let’s take your back into a more arched (extended) position with some exercises and help it go the direction it likes! It’s important to understand that flexion isn’t a “bad” thing, but can contribute to discomfort in acute situations and generally speaking we get enough rounding so let’s incorporate more arching into our day! Let’s mobilize and stabilize your low back with these!

1️⃣ Superman: on your stomach, raise both your arms and your legs. You may need to start with only the arms, or only the legs, and work up from there. This is going to activate your spine stabilizer muscles into this extended position.
.
2️⃣ Scorpion: on your stomach with your arms stretched out, kick one leg towards the other side of your body aiming for the opposite shoulder. You may need to start with smaller kicks and work your way up. This is great for mobilizing the back and activating it into extension.

Conceptually you understand that shifting and lateralizing is necessary for unilateral activities, e.g. the 1-Leg Deadlift.

So you shift and compress and dive into the exercise.

But as your perform your reps, you notice the hip of the unloaded (non-working) leg keeps hiking up as you ascend from the bottom position of the movement and you aren't feeling what you *should* be feeling.

I’m betting your lower back and/or outer hip is feeling tight after just a few reps.

You probably feel like you’re “losing balance”. What has been lost is unilateral compression and joint stacking through obliques, adductors, and hamstrings.

How do we remedy this?
*
️Slow down the movement. Use a tempo - 3 secs down, 2 secs pause at the bottom, 2-3 secs coming up.
*
️When you ascend from the bottom position, feel like you're pedaling or pulling your foot backward (don't actually do it) to drive your hip forward.
*
️Keep your neck/head still. Upon the ascent, you might feel tempted to pull your head back or arch your neck to come up. Back pain city.
*
️Place the unloaded foot on a slider (if no slider available, a towel on a wood floor works fine). Your brain will still sense security of having both feet touching the ground, but you can focus your effort on the working leg. Be careful not to load the 🦶 on the slider.
*
️Keep both feet on the ground and work on shifting and loading one side. Your brain will sense more security because both feet will be touching the ground, but again, we're only loading/using one side of our body.

If you need a sensory cue - feeling obliques on the same side of the working leg with the adductor (inner leg) is crucial for compression and loading. If you've lost either of these at any point, I bet you've lost position.

I know this is challenging. These are generic remedies and we can dive much deeper. We don’t need multiple objects to rely on and to force things into position.

Your brain and mind are in control. I'm not trying to trick it just to get results. I'm not doing anything. You're the one who will be learning new skills and strategies.

First training session since the British Finals. Good news...my back was ok. Bad news...my glutes are back to being incredibly lame again. In a weird way it's been a useful lesson in understanding what's going wrong. 
Things I noticed from my first squat session: 
1.My adductors are way too overactive
2. My glutes seem to think its a permanent holiday, even after lots of activation work in the warm-up
3. Left TVA and QL are lazy af

So I think I've cracked it. Even though 60kg felt like 120.

But even then, fine tuning these small fundamental movements of finding torque in the hips can be monumentally beneficial in athletic performance, pain management, even overall health. .

Massimo è un motociclista di 60 anni che, dopo un incidente ad alta velocità in pista, ha riportato un infortunio alla caviglia destra con diversi ematomi e traumi minori sul resto del corpo.
 Dopo la prima visita abbiamo notato un quadro dubbio e abbiamo proposto di effettuare una TC in cui è stata identificata una frattura non rilevata alla Radiografia eseguita in Pronto Soccorso.

Most people don't realize the importance of groin muscles. They are actually MORE active during deep squatting that the hamstrings but we neglect them during training.

Outlined in the video is a sample progression of this exercise. That's why I love this exercises, there are regressions and progressions for DAYS.

Para aliviar el dolor de una lesión es difícil decidir cómo hacerlo, si con calor o frío local. En este post te daremos a conocer cuál es el método más adecuado según cada situación:

Frío : El hielo es para lesiones o dolor reciente como es en un desgarro, contusión, esguince y para dolor post ejercicio.

Calor : Si ya han pasado unos 3-4 días desde tu lesión o dolor, el calor podría ser tu mejor opción. Además, si tu condición es crónica, de varias semanas o meses, el calor también es lo más adecuado.

Tienes que tener en consideración que son terapias que NO tratan la causa del dolor, solo disminuyen su intensidad.

To the right of my foot (in the top corner of tan building) is the room my mother passed away in. Ironically, she died as the local president of the Arthritis Society. It is most likely she passed down her joint disease to me .. so, she's here with me today in more ways than one.
