No-one who likes to be woken from an afternoon nap. You’re usually passed out completely and having the dreams you wish you had at night. Then it’s like “Why the hell did you do that?! Because you won’t sleep tonight! Yeah right, grumble grumble...”. It’s all true actually I love an afternoon nap but don’t have them often because then I’m awake late or up too early. .

Anyway, this is a Leopard and leopard actually don’t mind waking in the late afternoon because that’s when they start hunting. But like any cat they are moody and elusive and intelligent and magnificent, and they know it! .

There is much wisdom in the eye of a horse. They are an intelligent and cognisant species that has been linked with the evolution of human culture for millennia. We have utilised them as beasts of burden, machines of war and exploration, as companions, and for leisure. .

It’s hard to find someone who doesn’t like or have a fond horse story to tell. For me this individual towed a gyspsy wagon through the countryside, the clacking of his hooves echoing off tree trunks lining the track. It was simple and lovely. .

On some of the bespoke Expeditions that I operate we spend nights camped in a tree above a waterhole in a very remote location.
Photographers and wildlife lovers are immersed in the rhythms of the species that come and go to drink. We never know what will appear and that is part of the joy and wonder of the experience. .

These frames were captured over one night. As sunset falls across the plain herds of Elephant arrive to quench their thirst. Beneath a carpet of stars we watch them drink and play in the mud whilst lions bellow in the darkness. And at dawn the faint pastel light rises over the land waking countless birds that greet the day with song. .

It really is quite special! If this is of interest reach out to me via my website. .

The last faint rays of a setting sun caress ice and snow on the slopes of remote mountains in Eastern Greenland. Bitterly cold air descends over the water surface and within an hour the water congeals and begins to freeze. The scene is humbling, but it also highlights one of the great human traits, adaptability in the face of adversity. Ancient races once made their home in such inhospitable regions without the aid of technology as we know it today. .

Upper and Lower. It wasn’t my intention to create a diptych of this Cheeteah draped across a termite mound on the Simeyu Plains, when I was capturing him observing Thomson’s Gazelles in the grass. .

In edits sometimes you see frames that work together; very often photographers claim the result being deliberate but in reality it’s often coincidence. I do believe our unconscious brains guide our creative actions, so who knows maybe that was at play here too. .

In the second frame you will note the claws extended on the paw. Cheetah cannot retract their claws like other cats so this represents their functioning position. .

Media is awash with images of the tragedy unfolding in the Amazon Basin, fires ripping through countless kilometers of rainforest. It is worth noting that these fires burn all year, every year peaking during the dry season. My limited understanding is that these particular fires have joined together and sadly it’s taken this devastation to capture the worlds media attention. .

Equally disturbing is the sharing of inaccurate images by celebrities, politicians and photographers that don’t pertain to these fires or are in fact decades old. This has lead the Brazilian government to deny the extent of the current situation. Even when hearts are in the right place, we all need to think about the consequences of the information shared. .

This is a complex and challenging situation to resolve. Competing interests of corporations, indigenous people and vast numbers of expanding communities and families will exist after the cameras turn away. So rather than share a fire storm image, which is and should be done; I’m posting an Amazon frame that reminds me of a beautiful and peaceful day in the understory watching Leafcutter Ants and listening to birds in the canopy. .

It’s possible to spend days, weeks and even years working on a wildlife story, and even then there are no guarantees of success. We are all scarred with memories of “the one that got away”. Then there are those times when the wildlife comes to you and it all falls in place. However, if the species actually climbs on top of you, that fortune in long lenses you’ve carried around counts for nothing and an iPhone becomes your best tool. .

Such was the case attempting to photograph Ringtail Lemurs in Madagascar. They had been rescued from poachers and rehabilitated into a sanctuary. With that unnatural connection to humans the Lemurs had lost their fear, and now look down on us, literally! .

Watch a herd of zebra for any length of time, well long enough for them to stop eating and start thinking about other things; and you quickly realise there is a lot more going on behind those stripes than initially meets the eye. They are a proud and often obstinate species prone to quick turns of temper, leading to violent and painful encounters. .

However, they can also put on displays of sheer beauty and playfulness. I once watched a large herd galloping back and forth across a hillside frolicking and prancing like a black and white stream. Yes
On a hot summer night
Would you offer your throat to the wolf with the red roses?
Yes
I bet you to say that to all the boys.
It was a hot summer night and the beach was burning..... .

If you don’t know who sang these immortal lines there is nothing I can do to help you. If the memory of this song doesn’t bring a smile to your face, then you might need a little more time on the beach on a hot summer night! Lightning captured at 14mm. .

Diving coral reefs at night is a mesmerising experience. It’s also an opportunity to focus on exactly who you are and what you are doing, after all you’re underwater in pitch blackness. .

Species that take shelter during the daylight hours emerge to hunt and to be hunted; and sometimes those individuals such as this Anemone Fish make an appearance just to ensure there is nothing untoward happening. This bright orange defender rose into the darkness like a flame from a candle in the night. .

A troop of more than 60x Squirrel Monkeys, Saimiri sciureus, made their way down from the canopy and through the understory in search of fruiting trees. Their surprise was palpable as they emerged from the shadows to find me standing there! .

The great difficulty in photographing primates in the wild and especially small species, is their lifestyle keeps them often in the canopy. In the Amazon that can be a long way up! They move fast and are backlit, so they appear as bouncing black balls flying through the leaves. The joy has to come in simply watching them! .

Flashback to a very chilly dawn in southern Greenland. I have every layer on that I could fit under my Swiss National Geographic coloured jacket, and every pocket filled with batteries to keep them warm. .

The second frame is what I’m looking at, the fracture zone of the glacier where we camped at the base. The wind flowing down from the ice was almost the coldest I’ve felt. It was a restless night sleeping with all of the camera gear inside the sleeping bag with me. Cold, uncomfortable metal is no bedfellow! .

Dawn pierces the desert horizon, transforming the Aboriginal sacred site Uluru into a silhouette. The vast outback sky dwarfs the giant inselberg making it appear small in the landscape. Australia’s marvellous and beyond imaginingly vast deserts make us all feel small, and that is a good thing. .

I cherish every opportunity to spend time with Mountain Gorillas, and have watched with great joy their numbers increase over the decades I’ve been coming to this region. .

Recently they were re-classified as Endangered having previously been Critically Endangered. They are still at enormous risk, but their numbers are heading in the right direction after many years of hard work by local communities and global conservation bodies. .

It’s not always about having the best light shining directly on your subject, that super-saturated hue of the golden hour. It’s a myth that you’re always in the right place at the right time, that you planned and researched exactly when and where you should be. In reality that is just social media hype. .

We all do our best of course, but sometimes you happen across a scene and in those few seconds have to make a decision. Do I want a blown-out foreground or an accurate background? As is often the case, less is more. .

When this Leopard descended the tree it was all over in a blink. I consciously stopped my exposure down and metered off the background. The elegant lines of the beautiful cat were enough to tell the story of my brief encounter, and I was happy! Make every moment count but don’t miss the moment yourself, it’s just a photo after all.

No don’t get up, really don’t! Weddell Seals can move exceptionally fast when the need takes them. It’s Word Oceans Day again where did the year go?! I say that partly in jest, and also in reflecting on the opportunities I’ve had to spend time in different seas around our wonderful planet. .

I always cherish any time in the salty brine whether it’s surfing, diving or swimming. For me it’s good for my soul and a genuine poultice for the stresses of everyday life. Even walking in the shallows makes one feel rejuvenated, if you haven’t tried that in a while I strongly urge you to do so. .

I’d also encourage you to pick up a few pieces of rubbish from the beach even if it’s not yours. It won’t hurt you, and even grabbing one plastic bag might save a Sea Turtle from mistaking it for a jellyfish. .

The proud contours of the face of a King. It is nigh impossible not to feel humbled by a large male lion; the sheer size of a predator that can weigh in excess of 250kg and thunder across the savannah at tens of kilometres an hour is a marvel of evolution. The sheer impact of that mass at velocity, is enough to break bones. .

It’s always important to remember that the vast majority of male lions are not imbedded in a pride structure. They hunt alone or in pairs if they are brothers, but generally they have to bring down their own prey without a sisterhood of lioness. .

The bond between humans and horses runs like a river through the evolution of our civilisation. What we’ve achieved would not have been possible without the domestication of this species. .

From an emotional perspective, humans are inherently drawn to the intelligence and friendship that horses offer. In Australia indigenous communities form close relationships with horses that are utilised for mustering on outback cattle stations. Their horsemanship is a thing of pride and a skill they develop from childhood. .

Polar Bear have become the poster child for the global warming movement. With their habitat literally melting out from underneath them this makes sense. .

When a single species is used to promote an environmental campaign it’s known as a keystone or keynote species, and it is utilised to create a connection between the wider community and that ecosystem. Other examples are Giant Panda, Mountain Gorilla, Elephant and so forth. This is a well-utilised technique to assist people in valuing the natural world. After all, it’s easier to get people onboard for something furry rather than a big hairy spider! .

However, there are photographers and videographers who will bastardise their imagery and the message for financial gain. The message they share is often confused and inaccurate, and this spreads misinformation and often damages a cause and hampers good science. .

A perfect example is claiming every Polar Bear on land is a victim of global warming, this is not accurate. Nor is every bear on an iceberg surrounded by ocean suffering. Again, yes the polar regions are being devastated global warming but we as image makers need to be careful about the message we distribute. .
